The frigid air of the arctic had been warmed to a pleasant temperature by the strong summer sun. Saltwater lapped up at a gravelly beach, the liquid soaking through the pebbles into the earth. Dawn’s light was creeping down to warm the island where the northern wolf pack made their home. The night was chased away by orange-pink tendrils, but the moon still hung in the sky, like a silvery apparition. The long stretch of rugged rock that wound around the island was heated up, and within most of the icy floors had melted into puddles on the stone ground. Laying in a carved stone den was a large gray wolf with midnight-black fur. The wolf lifted his head with a controlled sigh, cocking his head and his ears to listen. Resignedly, the beta male of Baridiganda-Zaburi Pack stood up and trotted a little ways away from his nest.

What to do, what to do… the male pondered bitterly. He began to pace in a circle, his black tail swaying behind him. Lately, he had patrolled every inch of the border, had hunted until every wolf would be content, and had attempted to keep himself in shape for battle. However, all of this was becoming quite dull to him. His latest real adventure had been a hunt with the shaman, which had resulted in a successful kill but a broken rib. He was already healing pretty well, and despite the shaman’s warnings had been active even with the injury. He was way beyond the point where every breath made his chest ache…but now his mind throbbed with indecisiveness.

I wonder what Yume’s doing, he thought abruptly. He pivoted and dashed out of the main cavern, splashing through the pool of water before the entrance. He had become very close friends with the pretty shaman. Her being there had taken his mind away from Sarita, who had started to become distant once again. He didn’t mind, sadly. Espio actually hadn’t seen his mate around, but he hadn’t considered that she was lost. Unaware of this possibility, Espio darted outside to feel the warmth of the sun on his dark coat. He then kept going, finally stopping when he came to a smaller cavern hidden by ferns.

Espio pushed his way into the den, and he was instantly hit with the strong scent of herbs. He took in their pungent smell and turned his head. The beautiful she-wolf was half-asleep, hunched over her herbs. She didn’t appear to notice him yet, so he continued until he came to a pile separated from the rest. Espio lowered his muzzle to sniff the dark-smelling plants, and his nose wrinkled. His eyes fell upon bright red berries, dark green leaves, and a dark violet flower sitting on top of the pile. Its beauty forced him into a trance, and he came forward. “Hey, Yume, what’s this?” he asked, lowering his muzzle to pick up the deadly flower in his teeth.

The air shifted in the shaman's den as the melanistic brute came in. The mocha brown she-wolf stirred in her sleep and cracked open her eye lids, breathing in the familiar smell of her friend. She yawned openly as he bent down to see the flower.
"Hey, Yume, what's this?" She turned to look at him and answer when he took the plant into his mouth.

With a start, she leaped to her paws and called out a warning, "No! Don't eat that!" She bounded to him and harshly pushed his maw away before turning to look at him, the fright slowly dying from her glassy grey eyes. She drew a sharp breath and shook her head, suddenly finding the situation amusing now that the danger had passed. "That, oh smart one, is deadly nightshade."

She gingerly pushed the small, beautiful flower outside. Depositing the plant on the ground in a corner, she scraped ample dirt over it and returned to Espio with a small frown. "Honestly, Espio...that could have killed you," She paused and looked him over, relaxing enough to touch her maw to his in friendly greeting before drawing back, slightly embarrassed as a pink tinge crawled across her maw.

"My fault...I shouldn't have left it out after showing the pups never to eat that," she turned to look at the handsome ebon beta with amusement, "Too bad you weren't there, Espio...I could have used you to demonstrate what would happen if anyone did ingest it." She gave a soft growl of laughter and beamed around the camp, the summer's warmth reaching her heart and filling her with odd joy.

Espio heard the female shout. Startled, he pulled away from the flower as she shoved his muzzle away. He didn’t put up his dark shield—of course, he often never did around the shaman—and instead allowed her to see his puzzled, startled expression. His violet eyes were wide as she turned to fix him with a stare. He had seen the fear in her eyes, and he frowned as to why when she explained that it could kill him as she scooped dirt over the flower.

She brushed her muzzle against his and acquired a pink tinge around it. He smiled warmly as she spoke up again, stating that she should have used him in a demonstration. He chuckled, “Well, at this rate I may have to attend these sessions. Next thing you know, I’ll be devouring more poisonous plants.” He leapt out of her den happily. Suddenly, his expression became guarded in the heartbeat that he looked toward the main den. He loosened up again when he saw no one else was around. He could be open around Yume, he guessed. She wouldn’t use his own emotions to hurt him.

“So… I’ve got nothing to do. You wanna patrol or hunt or do something?” he asked. He was usually never this informal with another wolf, but here he made an exception. He was used to speaking to her as if she were a sister. His voice was still as dark and deep as it always was, but the expression in his blue-violet eyes was light. He bent and sniffed at the ground for no reason in particular.

Suddenly, Espio whirled around, his face dark and shielded. The fur on his neck lifted, and he drew back his lips into a growl, staring at something just beyond Yume’s shoulder. His inner self was forgetting to correct his outer self’s actions, but then it felt the fun in Espio’s heart. In the next heartbeat, he had leapt at the shaman with a small laugh, aiming to pin her down. I’ve really softened up, he thought darkly even as he started to play. I need to go and rip something’s throat out after this…

Her keen grey eyes widened in surprise as he snarled over her shoulder. About to turn, she gasped as the obsidian wolf leaped at her, suddenly laughing and pinning her to the ground. Surprised, she felt her fur tingle and she laughed, too. Pulling herself from his grasp, she retreated, snarling playfully and lunged at him, snapping at the air next to his ears with playful intentions. Suddenly remembering herself, she looked around the camp, hoping no one saw the pair.

She felt suddenly a little guilty as her mind came to rest on Sarita but she forced herself to hide that. She'd learned much from Espio and could guard her feelings almost as well as him now. Grinning at him, she flicked her plume at his face and bounded for the trees that grew near the camp. "C'mon, I think I saw a couple of plump looking squirrels that way...saving your furry butt has made me somewhat hungry!" She laughed at him, stepping lightly into the trees.

The she-wolf trotted on, glancing over her shoulder to see if Espio had caught up yet. Deeper into the trees, she sauntered, enjoying the brilliant shafts of sunlight, turned green by the leaves and falling onto the ground in scatters. Suddenly, she found herself staring at a large oak with a slash over its trunk. Curious, she sniffed the tree, catching the scent of Taka, faint and distant. Eyes widening, she took a step back, understanding immediately what she'd stumbled upon.

Staring at the ground in front of her, she sank to her haunches and wrapped her tail neatly around her paws. Guilt and sadness swelled up inside her heart as she looked at the upset dirt. A leaf fell from above just as a single crystalline tear fell down Yume's cheek. She quickly licked it away, waiting for Espio to show up, lost in time.

Espio growled as the shaman slipped away from him then launched her own attack, snapping at his ears. He moved slightly to the side with a wide smile. However, Hatsuyume had covered her expression up with a glance around at the camp. He frowned for a split second before he understood. She was probably thinking about Sarita. I don’t know why, he thought gruffly to himself. I mean, Yume and I are best friends, and Sarita is my mate. That’ll never change, no matter how close to Yume I get… He offered her a half-smile, but he realized with frustration that his cheeks were heating up. He thanked Lupus—whom he hadn’t thought that much about previously—for his black fur so that Yume couldn’t see his blush.

He was launched out of his ponderings when a furry tail whipped him gently in the face. He grumbled and put on an irritated look as she talked to him and ran toward the trees. He followed slowly, gazing up at the pine boughs growing up around him. He loved Baridiganda and its lands. The whole place, while it had first looked desolate and cold, was really a beautiful place. He could gaze at the Northern Lights, stand on the sparkling Rettilg Glacier, leap past the glittering streams in the forest…

Espio looked up sharply when he felt Hatsuyume stop moving up ahead. He cocked his head as she approached a tree, and he bowed his head, approaching her quietly. He had heard shortly after their birth what had happened to his leader’s litter of pups; of course the females survived and grew up to annoy him, but there had been a son… Named Ikazuchi by his father, the runty male had died shortly after birth as the group had moved to the camp. He smiled sadly for the pup, probably leaping around now in the heavens, but he couldn’t help it; his hackles rose when he caught the trace of Taka’s scent. After their argument, he had resented the alpha male deeply. Hatsuyume hated that, but he couldn’t help his own feelings besides hiding them around her when it came to Taka.

“Are you okay?” he whispered, touching his nose briefly to her cheek. He smiled at her comfortingly and perked up his ears, turning his head to look around.

[Okay, I’m a bit rusty…but it’s something…isn’t it?]

A white she-wolf was laying in the Bariganda Camp. She was gazing sadly at the Shaman’s Den where she watched her mate talking to Hatsuyume. He looked…happy. There was a smile in his eyes. He never looked like that before...never. Not unless he was looking at her, the wolf that he loved. And now he was shooting the shaman a gaze like that...she drew her own conclusions.

Sarita had been extremely busy for the past few seasons with Beta business, hunting, and so on. She’d barely been able to talk to Espio at all! And now she feared that she had driven him away, that she hadn’t been paying enough attention to her love and was now suffering the consequences. Either he had changed so much that she hardly knew him any more, or he was starting to love another wolf; both possibilities sucked entirely. There was always the black wolf had just made a really close friend, but knowing him, she doubted it.

Espio leaped at Hatsuyume playfully. That settled it. There was something seriously wrong with Espio. Sarita’s blue eyes hardened for a second as she stared in disbelief of how much he had changed. She shook her head slowly as if to disapprove of her own thoughts. He was still Espio, and she still loved him. He had to still love her…didn’t he?

The Shaman said something (she was too far away to hear), and trotting towards the Bariganda hunting grounds and out of sight. Espio soon followed her. Sarita couldn’t let this go on any longer. She had to go and talk to him…or spy on him and see what he was doing…and if he truly had feelings for Hatsuyume…either one. She waited a minute uncertainly before she got up, shook the snow out of her pure white fur, and began silently following them.

Espio’s ears twitched again, and he gave the shaman one last comforting look before turning around. He heard something moving very quietly through the trees. There wasn’t a lot of vegetation to hide around the camp, and at first he thought himself mad when he saw the white against the browns and greens of the trees. Snow? he wondered briefly, but he shook his head when he saw blue-green eyes within the “snow”. He smiled to himself and ran forward.

“Hey! Sarita!” he called. She looked as if she were trying to sneak somewhere, so he frowned for a heartbeat before grinning again. “Yume said she found some squirrels to hunt. You want to come with us? You do like squirrels, right?” he chuckled. He didn’t realize how he looked to Sarita, as if he were leaving her for the shaman, but instead knew that Hatsuyume was his friend and Sarita his love.

Pushing his black head forward to nuzzle the arctic she-wolf, he murmured, “It wouldn’t be the same without hunting with you at my side again.” The innocence and love and his eyes was very sincere, and for once he didn’t mask it. He let his positive feelings out. Recently, his friendship with Hatsuyume had opened him up so that he only masked himself with strangers or wolves he didn’t like or trust.

“Is something wrong?” he asked with a frown. His eyes didn’t show the concern he felt for her, but his voice did.

She was pulled out of her trance by the soft sound of Espio's voice. Turning to look at him, she smiled sadly. "Fine..." She pushed away the thoughts that nagged at her mind. It was my fault...I let him die... She sighed and threw back her head to look at the array of dancing lights. Ruby reds and many hues of green flashed across the dark canvas like paint.

"The aurora..." She murmured and stood up, eyes fixed on the dark firmament. Turning back to her friend, she thought she'd caught a flash of white fur around the trees. Pausing, she sniffed the air, hiding her suspicion. She turned to Espio again, eyes questioning as she flicked her tail towards camp again.

Looking apologetic and slightly embarrassed, she grinned sheepishly. "I know I said we'd hunt...but maybe we should get back..? Tetesi..." She paused, frowning and glancing around. She couldn't shake off the feeling of paranoia. Someone was near, she sniffed again, and watching? Guilt flooded her again, but this time she thought of Sarita. Get out of it, Yume! Espio is only a friend...he will never like you that way! The thought calmed her but also saddened her a little, bringing back the guilt. Did she want him to? She shook her head, impossible.

"Espio..." she frowned at him, parting her jaws to speak but stopped as Espio called out Sarita's name. She looked up as the white she-wolf appeared and saw the glee on Espio's face. Feeling half saddened and half exhilirated for him, she smailed broadly at them. As Espio spoke again, she shook her head, laughing.

"You two go ahead...I think Tetesi needs me back home." She growled softly, successfully putting cheer into her face. Smiling happily at Sarita, there was no trace of anything that she could take wrongly. "Welcome back, Sarita." She dipped her head in respect to the beta-femme and blinked at Espio again, taking in the happiness on his face.

[o o c] Yume has paranoia and cough Sar can't find out yet...she needs to know after the pups come

Sarita gasped when she heard her name being called and froze for a second before nervously looking at her paws. She didn't know how Espio would react to her spying on him. Would he be angry? Would he realise why she was here? Would he care? Uncertainly, she looked up at her mate. She saw that he was grinnning...and soon she was grinning too. She didn't know what it was about him, but when he was happy to see her, it just made her day like...like a beacon through the darkness of her depressed heart. What he said made her grin even harder. He knew her so well. She loved squirrels. He was the only wolf that knew her so well. This encounter proved to her that there was still love in his heart, and that she could still fix their relationship, if it had ever been broken. Here in the forest, humid with summer with Espio...there was nowhere she'd rather be in the world...nowhere. "Of course there's nothing wrong, Espio...my love..." she muttered dreamily and stared into his eyes. All suspicions of a relationship between him and Hatsuyume were vaporized instantly. Espio was just weird like that...

The black wolf turned his head quickly to perk up his ears. Hatsuyume was announcing that she was headed back to the camp. Espio nodded to her, his indigo eyes shimmering as his heart swelled with warmth toward the shaman. He waved his tail. “Goodbye then, Yume. We’ll bring you back some of what we catch,” he called to her.

The beta male turned back to the white she-wolf standing before him. She seemed unusually happy to see him, and her broad grin showed it all. As her blue-tinged eyes sparkled, she whispered, “Of course there’s nothing wrong, Espio…my love.” His heart warmed up again, and he leaned forward to nuzzle into her neck, taking in her familiar scent. He hadn’t seen her in a while, but the shaman had taken his mind off of things.

As innocent as a lamb, the beta male wasn’t aware of Hatsuyume watching his glee, or of Sarita’s past suspicions. He just knew bliss. For the first time in his life, he was truly happy. There was no wrong…Baridiganda was now the strongest pack, with prey to go around; he had a wonderful mate and several friends. The only arguments seemed minor enough that they were washed away by his happiness.

Espio suddenly slipped his emotionless mask onto his face. He gave his mate a level stare and walked past her, headed toward a tall spruce tree. The wolf dropped into a crouch as his indigo eyes narrowed at the furry brush he saw hanging down from one of the boughs. Suddenly, the beta sprang and smashed against the tree, bringing the squirrel down with a shriek. He threw himself forward to bite it, and the small creature struggled. Its life went out like a doused candlelight.

“Hmm… Think fast,” growled Espio darkly. He picked up the dead squirrel in his mouth, swung his head around, and flung the body at Sarita’s face with a tiny smirk.
