Alphas

The alphas are the leaders of the pack. They are always mates, though there can be just one lone alpha. Their word is law, and they are the most respected members of the pack. They are referred to as the "Lord" or "Lady" of the wolf pack, and keep the group together. They often have proven themselves somehow to become a leader.

Betas

These wolves are the second in command. They take orders from the alphas and no others. They are usually either the second strongest wolves, the alphas' best friends, or one of the leader's sibling. There can be one lone beta, or two mates. They will take of ruling briefly if both leaders are ill, and will almost always take over permanately if both wolves die.

Shaman

This is the medicine wolf of the pack. Wise and kind, he/she cares for wolves in pain and gives advice to the alpha. The shaman is often quite old, however it is not unknown for a young wolf to hold this position. Shamans may have apprentices. Wandering healers who belong to no pack are sometimes called upon if the pack has no current shaman.

Warriors

These are highly respected wolves who act as the body guards to the pack. They fight off any opposition and have a duty to give their life for their leader if neccesary. These wolves must be ultimately loyal and strong. When not fighting, they will hunt but most often take the place of scouts if the number is running low.

Scout

Scouts are slightly below warrior and at the same rank of repsect as hunters. They patrol the pack's scent borders and report back to the alphas. They do not fight often, but are very capable of doing so. They must be intelligent and swift. Scouts also help meeting and greeting newcomers. Sometimes other ranks patrol if a scout is not present.

Hunter

Hunters must provide for the pack, yet they are at the same level as scouts and more nessicary to have. They often go on hunting missions and even forage for carrion; they do anything it takes to get enough food for their fellow wolves. If a hunter shows potential to become a warrior they will be promoted to that position.

Elder

These are the wolves who are to old to work for the pack, at around eight years or more. They are usually retired scouts, warriors or hunters. Elders are treated with much tolerance and care always, as they are very highly respected. It is rare for a wolf to be accepted into a pack if they will immediately become an elder, although it is not impossible.

New Wolves

These are wolves who have just been accepted by the alphas into the pack. They have no responsibilities, but betas and alphas will test them to see if they have they have the potential to be a hunter, scout, hunter...or even a shaman!

Den Mother

These are the expectant females or those with pups. They don't continue on with their former rank if they are pregnant for fear of the unborn pups' health, but once they are weaned and can take care of themselves they return to their previous ranking.

Pup

Pups are the future of the pack, so are treated with the upmost care. The day that a female bears pups is a celebration! The pack rules to not apply so harshly tpo the pups, and they are treated with affection and love by all wolves. It is a serious offence to harm a pup; one that may result in exile, or even death.

Loner

These wolves have no pack. They live alone in the wild. They hunt and fend for themselves and live by no code. Loners may be accepted into packs or start one of their own if they find a mate and have experiance. Sometimes they join in wars for fear of their own territory, yet if one is lingering on the pack's terra for too long the wolves may not hesitate to kill them.
